Playing career

Club

McDonnell plays his club hurling with the famous Glen Rovers club on the north side of Cork city and has enjoyed much success in all grades.

In 2005 McDonnell began his club career as a member of the club's minor team. He won back-to-back club minor championship titles with victories over Carrigaline in 2005 Bishopstown in 2006.

Two years later in 2008 McDonnell was a member of the Glen Rovers under-21 team that reached the final of the club under-21 championship. Duhallow provided the opposition. Duhallow provided the opposition and forced the game to end in a 2-15 to 1-18 draw.[2] The replay was just as exciting and produced a high-scoring game. Glen Rovers eventually won by 4-15 to 2-18, giving McDonnell a county under-21 championship title.

By 2010 McDonnell was a member of the Glen Rovers senior team that qualified for the final of the county senior championship. Reigning champions Sarsfield's provided the opposition and went on to retain their title with a narrow 1-17 to 0-18 victory.[3]

Inter-county

McDonnell first played for Cork as a member of the county's minor team in 2007. He was a substitute on the team that lost the Munster final to Tipperary but later qualified to play the same opposition in the All-Ireland final. McDonnell came on as a substitute as Cork lost out by 3-14 to 2-11.[4]

McDonnell later played with the Cork under-21 hurling team for three years but enjoyed little in those campaigns.

In 2011 McDonnell made his competitive debut for the Cork senior hurling team in a National Hurling League game against Offaly.[5] Later that season he claimed the corner-back position on Cork's starting fifteen for the championship.
